Vapor intrusion is the process of volatile oil or hazardous materials from the subsurface entering the indoor air of a structure. When these contaminants have been released or have migrated near buildings, they can present a risk of exposure to building occupants via inhalation. Specific sources of contamination include:
- Leaking underground or aboveground storage tanks or vessels
- Piping and conduits, floor drains
- Dry wells
- Industrial waste storage
- Contaminated groundwater plumes
- Spills
Proper protection of a site and inhabitants includes preventative measure like conceptual site models and protective measures including active mitigation systems to help guard against potential vapor intrusion pathways.
