What do firefighting foam, carpet, and non-stick pans have in common?  They may all contain per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), a suite of synthetic “forever” chemicals highly resistant to degradation that pose potential human health risks and environmental cleanup and liability challenges for businesses.

For that reason, forever chemicals are a rising risk management concern – and we have our customers’ backs when they want to phase PFAS out of their operations.

When it came time for our energy infrastructure client to re-evaluate its environmental risk profile, PFAS were a pain point. They stored aqueous film forming foam (AFFF), a PFAS-based fire retardant, on-site and sought our counsel to help minimize their exposure.

Liberty Mutual’s environmental liability team collaborated with our client’s internal risk management team and a third-party environmental consultant specializing in PFAS to develop a go-forward strategy. We partnered to identify a fluorine-free alternative, advise on the safe, cost-effective disposal of existing PFAS on the property, and develop an environmental program to meet their risk management needs.

Working together, we were able to address a key environmental exposure affecting our client, help protect the worksite in the event of fire, and position the company for success moving forward.

Handling materials and objects is part of the job for countless workers, from manufacturing and construction to wholesale. However big or small a business is, frequent overexertion injuries have serious consequences, costing employers more than $13 billion a year.

To help employers better protect their workers and reduce risks, Liberty Mutual partnered with Kinetica Labs, a Velocity EHS company, to develop the Liberty Mutual ErgoValuator™ app, which tackles this critical issue with fast and accurate risk assessments in the palm of your hand.

The ErgoValuator, used in collaboration with Liberty Mutual Risk Control expertise, can help identify, prioritize, and reduce ergonomic risk. By uploading a video to the app, employers can receive a report that analyzes the task’s potential to injure employees and indicates opportunities to reduce that risk in just minutes.

Heralded as a significant advance in evidence-based tools and winner of a 2021 Business Insurance Innovation Award, the ErgoValuator empowers employers with technology to help keep workers safe.

Our customers face many complex risk-management challenges, not the least of which is developing strategies to mitigate the effects of climate change.

In 2021, there were 20 separate billion-dollar weather and climate disaster events in the U.S. The total cost from these events was $145 billion. These staggering numbers make it clear that any strategy to combat severe weather has to itself be strong. Which is why we’ve partnered with Jupiter Intelligence to leverage state-of-the-art analytics and develop risk assessment tools, including site-specific maps that identify flood risks. For contractors large and small, surety bond solutions can be the difference between getting a job or not – but like projects, not every solution is the same and a company’s needs can change over time. So when a small/midsize drywall contractor had the opportunity to take on a large project, it needed a surety that could respond to those changing needs. It found that in Liberty Mutual Surety and we’ve been supporting its continued growth for more than seven years now.

Early on, the contractor was focused on small to midsize projects using our Xpress product and needed more complex surety bonds to win bids on key projects. Our Surety Plus Vista underwriters worked closely with the company to understand its financials and develop a surety solution with backing by the Small Business Administration (SBA) Preferred Surety Bond (Plan B) program.

Over the years and in partnership with the contractor’s agent, we’ve provided recommendations to help it improve its financial reporting and encouraged it to access programs through the SBA and utilize its 8-A status to secure government contracts to support its growth. All the while, we continued to write a variety of bonds to support larger and more complex projects, transitioning between Liberty Mutual Surety’s Vista and standard product offerings as the company scaled.

Throughout this long-term, collaborative partnership, we’ve watched as the company has evolved its operations, strengthened its balance sheet, and grown into the leading federal general contractor and commercial drywall specialist it is today.

The pandemic has strained the healthcare industry in unprecedented ways. Hospitals and healthcare facilities have been overwhelmed by the many challenges created by the virus.

One very acute issue, especially in the early phase of the pandemic, was the shortage of beds to accommodate the influx of COVID-19 patients. Across the country, healthcare providers and government agencies looked to convert facilities including sports arenas and convention centers into usable space to care for patients. Crucial to the success of this solution was finding an insurance partner who would step up and provide specialized coverage for pandemic-related risks.

So when the need arose, our specialty healthcare liability team did just that, providing the compassion and expertise to help deliver solutions to bolster the resilience of one healthcare facility.
